Voltron Force - My Predictions

Ok... So I've just watched episode 14 of the new Voltron Force cartoon (which I'm still really impressed with, btw), and I think I've got a sense of where this is all going in the remaining 8-10 episodes of this first season. As of episode 14 Inside the Music, we've now seen all five Voltron configurations, beginning of course with Black Center in Episode 2 Defenders of Arus, followed by Red Center in episode 5 Joyride to Doom, after which came Yellow Center in episode 6 The Hunkyard, then Blue Center in episode 8 Deep Blue (my favourite configuration in my favourite episode to date), and now, after what seems like a long wait and much teasing, we've finally seen Green Center.

Each configuration has it's own strengths and weaknesses, each unleashes a different weapon. Black, of course, has the iconic Blazing Sword for up-close combat, Red has a pair of Magma Cannons for long-range combat and fast-moving targets, Yellow has twin Wrecking Maces for heavy assault in the middle range, Blue has Titanic Trident (I just LOVE Blue Center) which seems to be mostly for the manipulation of water and temperature, and Green has the Shield, which can be employed as a spiked projectile boomerang thingy (Interestingly, Green Center is the only configuration to have a different face, which is kinda cool). We've also seen Voltron taken over by Admiral Wade (episode 13 Clash of the Lions), and under those circumstances, slave to Wade's will and put to work as an instrument of conquest and punishment, the special weapon was a sizzling whip.

Now, I half expected Green's unique power to be an invulnerability to Haggarium, and I wasn't far off, I guess, the Shield being a powerful defense - we may yet see it used in that capacity. If the Red Lion's element is Fire, the Blue's is Water, the Yellow's is Earth and the Black is who knows what (Heart, perhaps?), it makes sense for the Green Lion's element to be Air, and certainly forests are the 'lungs' of a planet, and Green pilot Pidge's special thing (as we learned this episode) seems to be music, which is basically waves of sound through a medium, most commonly air.

Red Lion, and by extension Red Center, have a special resistance to extreme heat. Yellow Lion and thus Yellow Center are capable of withstanding powerful blows, rather like solid rock can. Blue Lion and Blue Center operate effectively under, on, in or around water, so what does that leave us? Green Center seemed less vulnerable to the soundwave attacks of the latest Robeast, and it certainly seemed to attack most suddenly and quickly, which is in keeping with Pidge's own strengths. But what of the future? Where do the Cadets fit in? Now that Vince has unlocked all the different configurations, what becomes of him? I rather think the final episodes of the first season will see changes in the regular lineup... it's starting to look more and more likely that Allura will step down as pilot of the Blue Lion to become Queen of Arus, and that Larmina, her royal niece, will take her place. What makes me think this? Well, a couple of things. For one, it wouldn't be that much of a change, Larmina's still an Arusian Princess, albeit one with a bit less maturity and compassion. Her Volt-com weapon is a staff, which isn't too dissimilar to Blue's Titanic Trident I guess. And she's already piloted Blue Lion by herself on a handful of occasions, most recently in Clash of the Lions, an episode in which Coran tells the Cadets that the Lions seem to be able to sense who is and who is not worthy of piloting them. Larmina replacing Allura in the Blue Lion is almost a sure bet.

Of the other adult pilots, Pidge is the only one who seems to have any real life outside Voltron, this most recent episode having revealed that he's a popular and famous musician. I have a sneaking feeling that Pidge is going to be replaced before too long, and most likely by Vince, the other resident tech-genius. I wouldn't be surprised if Pidge's double life turned out to compromise the team's safety in some way. Vince seems like the most logical replacement for Pidge, for as well as the aforementioned tech-genius they share, Vince has piloted Green before by himself a couple of times and hell, their names even sound kinda similar. Although, I can see Larmina ending up in the Green Lion as a somewhat less likely alternative, given that she and Pidge seem to share the same sort of agility and love of music, and that Allura and Vince seem to share a special bond. I think I'd be happier with Vince in the Blue Lion, to be honest.

Which leaves Daniel - bloody irritating, immature, Scrappy-esque Daniel, who doesn't have some sort of innate special quality (Princess or direct descendant of Voltron's creators), which means it's a sure-fire bet that his claim to fame is going to be that he will one day pilot the Black Lion, which has been his dream and ambition since the very first episode. From a narrative standpoint, it makes perfect sense. Which means that something's going to happen to kick Keith out of the command-chair, my guess is that he's going to be injured as a result of Daniel's stupidity, which will be one of the things that will force Daniel to grow up (Keith's uniform even looks a bit like Sven's from back in the old days, maybe it's a hint?). I think Keith's 'retirement' will be tied in to the romantic sub-plot that's been simmering away since before the beginning of Voltron Force - the rivalry between Keith and Lance for Allura's affections.

It's pretty obvious that she's going to choose Keith in the end, so my bet is that Keith ends up marrying Allura as a sort of consolation prize - perhaps he becomes ambassador to the Galactic Alliance in Coran's place. And Daniel will end up taking his place as pilot of the Black Lion, but NOT leader of Voltron Force - that will be Lance in the Red, as the highest ranking remaining original pilot. Daniel will have to grow into his role as leader under the supervision of the last two original pilots still on the team - Lance and Hunk, both of whom he shares a mentor-pupil relationship with.

There's no question in my mind that Daniel will end up piloting the Black Lion and one day becoming the leader of the Voltron team, his character arc is the most classic and predictable of the lot, and he's already the primary audience identification figure. He narrates the intro, he was the first cadet, and indeed the first character that the audience was introduced to, he has the most growing up to do and he's the Cadet who's 'nothing special'. But of the three cadets, he's also undeniably the chief trouble-maker - he's got 'eventual team leader' stamped all over him, like Hot-Rod/Rodimus Prime in Transformers. Also worth noting, Daniel's Volt-com power is the most lion-like of them all, taking the form of glowing lion claws. That's gotta be significant. So yeah - I expect that we'll see at least one of the Cadets graduate by the end of this first season, most likely Larmina, but possibly Vince, as Allura steps down. The times, they are a'changing, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds.

Guess I'm a Robophile...

So...

I'm obsessed with robots.

I think it was Voltron, Mighty Orbots or Transformers that started it... back when I was a kid in the 80s. The idea of huge robots that joined up to form even bigger ones was always something that fascinated me, or maybe just robots that turned into other things. I remember being insanely envious of kids at school who had the Voltron toys, which of course I was never allowed to have because my mum thought Voltron was Satanic. Transformers was perfectly fine though - no magic, devils or witches to be found there. So me and my two brothers amassed an impressive collection of Transformers, mostly the more obscure Autobots, because they were smaller and cheaper, but we did manage to get the whole set of Constructicons, two of the Seekers, a couple of Insecticons and some of the Stunticons. When I was a little older and started to get some money of my own through doing paper rounds after school and other part time jobs, I managed to get some of the 'bots I'd always wanted... including Starscream, Bumblebee, Ratchet, Grimlock and Megatron, and my mum bought my younger brother and I the Holy Grail of Transformers for Christmas one year - Optimus Prime, which we had to share, much to my frustration. I never did manage to get Soundwave or Shockwave though, my two favourite Decepticons, and in fact my two favourite Transformers. Oh well.

After that, anything with robots in immediately grabbed my attention. Other cartoons like COPS, The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers and even Gargoyles, movies like the Star Wars films, Short Circuit, Batteries Not Included, The Black Hole and Robocop, even silly live-action TV shows like Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. I started looking for older TV shows and movies with robots in them, and grew fond of The Jetsons, Lost in Space and old movie classics like Metropolis, The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Forbidden Planet. My interest in robots continued unabated, right up to Steven Spielberg's epic A.I. and Pixar's brilliant Wall.e... In fact, robot-wise, there's very little that I haven't seen.

My obsession's not limited to just robots, of course, I'm also fascinated by all the many cyborgs of film and TV, from Star Trek's Data and the Borg to Doctor Who's Daleks and Cybermen, the Synthetics from the Aliens franchise and the various Terminators from the films of the same name. I still have a lot of my cyborg and robot-toys, packed away in boxes at my mum's house, and I have every intention of collecting them and putting them all out on display when I have a place of my own. Sigh. One day...

Toothless the Night Terror (How To Train Your Dragon)

Here Come The Littles

The Littles is one of the things from my childhood that made me gay, I'm sure of it ;)

AZRAEL

Gargamel's nasty cat Azrael, bane of the Smurfs' lives :)

Smurf the Smurf Up!!

CAVE TROLL

MORGOTH!!

Many casual fans of Tolkien's great works think that Sauron is the Satan-figure of Middle-Earth, but they are mistaken.

MORGOTH BAUGLIR (originally Melkor) was Sauron's master in the First Age of Middle Earth, Melkor was the most powerful of the Ainur (gods), but turned to darkness and became Morgoth, from whom all evil in the world of Middle-earth ultimately stems(all the first Dragons, Balrogs, Werewolves, Trolls and Goblins were created by Morgoth, as well as the Witch King of Angmar, later the leader of the Nazgul); he is the ultimate antagonist of Arda. Sauron, one of the Maiar (angels) of Aulë (the Creator-God), betrayed his kind and became Morgoth's most powerful and loyal lieutenant.

Morgoth was the principal agent of evil in the epic saga known as The Silmarillion, and his influence lingered in the world even after he was cast from it into the outer void. Morgoth's example provided later ages a cautionary tale against pride, wrath, envy, lust for power, and greed — and of the destruction these visit upon oneself and others.

Most importantly, Morgoth was never destroyed. Sauron, his servant, is better thought of as the 'Anti-Christ' of Middle-Earth's Second and Third Age.

SMAUG - as imagined by Peter Konig

I've seen a lot of paintings of Smaug, the great and terrible King Under The Mountain, but Peter Konig's concept (which I can only assume was the official one while he and Guillermo del Toro were attached to the Peter Jackson Hobbit project) is by far the best. He looks crafty and evil, and it's a distinctive look so unlike the generic dragons that there are so many of everywhere - he'd be forever instantly recognizable if he looked like this. Not to mention, the design's in keeping with the aesthetic established by the three Lord of the Rings films already completed :)

As always, click on each image to enlarge... it's well worth it to see this fantastic art in detail!

Sauron the Deceiver

Sauron, the lord of darkness, seen here in both his guises as the blazing Eye of Mordor and as Annatar the Fair, the beautiful visage he used to deceive the Elves, tricking them into creating the Three Rings of the Elven-folk.

Iofur Raknison - King of the Panserbjorne

The vicious King Iofur Raknison, the Bear who wanted to be human, from Philip Pullman's fantastic first book in his His Dark Materials trilogy, Northern Lights (titled The Golden Compass for cinema audiences). Frightening, but Oh! So stylish! :)

(As always, click on the images to enlarge).

The NEW Voltron Lions - Voltron Force

The revised Lion designs for the new Voltron Force cartoon... I LOVE them! They've all been individualized a bit more than they used to be, they've been streamlined and the Black is the only one that's noticeably different size now (more on that later). They seem to be slightly bigger than the originals, but how much of that is down to the change in animation style is hard to say. And of course, each Lion's unique relationship to a different aspect of Planet Arus' geography/environment is made more obvious in their respective strengths and weaknesses, and each has been outfitted with a different weapon its tail module.

The Red and Blue Lions have sprouted wings, too, presumably as an indication of their pilots' higher ranking relative to the Green and Yellow pilots. The sleek Blue Lion (or Lioness?) is still my favourite, but the Black is MUCH improved, it looks far more powerful and lordly than the old design (though of course, in-story they're the same Lion). I'm still loving the Green, and the Yellow is now the most different-looking, with its enlarged, masculine lower jaw, cracked eye/window and heavyset frame. I'm not so keen on the sharp angles and low posture of the Red, but it's not so bad and it seems to suit new-Lance. And all together, they make one very sleek and sexy Voltron :)

Voltron, Defender of the UNIVERSE!

These images are of the original Voltron in all his awesome robo-glory :)

Princess Allura - from Pathetic to Powerful

Allura, Princess of Arus, used to really bug me. She was weak, and frail, and always in need of a man to rescue and/or protect her. Sure, she stepped up and became the pilot of the Blue Lion after Sven was injured, but she was always the first one to get knocked out or sidelined in a fight. Also, she was 'the chick' - basically the only female character in classic Voltron, and that's pretty poor.

New Voltron Force only does marginally better on the sex ratio, but the new show makes up for it by introducing tough warrior chick Larmina (Allura's neice), who can beat any of the boys in a fight, and more importantly, by making Allura not only the very heart and soul of the show with far more obvious authority over Keith and the rest of the boys and a lot more wisdom, but actually pretty badass on her own. She's an expert pilot of the Blue Lion now, she's just as tough as the boys in a fight in or out of her Lion, and she frequently saves the day or gets herself out of trouble. She's a great role model for young girls, and DAMN! is she a hottie now! She and young Cadet Vince are the standout characters of the new show, and I'm just thrilled about that.
